Tattooing with purpose: Local tattoo artist uses her craft to help others

Sophie Demers

Just over a year into full-time tattooing, local artist Jess Hubbard is already making a name for herself, not only through her award-winning work, but in how she uses her craft to help others and make an impact.

The Gatineau-based artist says that art has been a constant throughout her life. She has worked with woodburning, ceramics, and digital illustration, but when she found tattooing, she knew she had found her passion.

Jess says she does many styles including traditional and small colour realism and is currently focusing on colour tattoos. “I want to be versatile in absolutely every style,” she noted. “And not just be able to do it; I want to be great in every style.”

She works independently out of her studio but says that learning in the tattoo industry never ends. Despite owning her own studio, learning never stops. She always takes the opportunity at tattoo conventions to watch other artists' work and learn from them.

Her studio, Red Clover Tattoos, is located on the property behind her home in Gatineau. “I provide my clients with a safe and welcoming environment,” she said. “It’s important for me that they have a private, judgement-free zone. I want them to feel comfortable. I work with them so that they get exactly what they want and enjoy the process of working with me.”

Jess often travels across the country to tattoo conventions, where she has won two awards for her work in colour and traditional tattooing. This year, she will be taking her work international, as she plans to attend a tattoo show in France.

Through her tattooing journey, she was able to train in Calgary with an experienced paramedical specialist and now offers inkless scar revision. This less known practice can help visually reduce scarring from self-harm scars, c-sections, tummy tucks, gender affirming surgery scars, and much more.

“For many years, tattooing over scars was the way people covered them. This is still an amazing option, and I’ve done many, but there are also other options to consider,” said Jess. “Some people want to soften or heal their scars; others want to highlight them with tattoos. Every option is valid and I want to work with people on their journey to feel comfortable in their own skin.”

To make the service more accessible, she aims to help at least two people each month free of charge. Clients can request a consultation on her website to be considered for free treatment. “It doesn't cost me much, but what it gives back emotionally when helping someone is priceless,” said Jess, encouraging those interested to share their story and photos at Redclovertattoos@gmail.com for a free quote or plan.”

Through her tattooing and scar revision services, Jess says she has met so many incredible people and has connected with other Gatineau entrepreneurs. She aims to always support local people where she can and contribute to her community. Jess’s commitment to care goes beyond her studio; she works to rescue animals and often does temporary caretaking for injured animals until they can be transferred to other facilities.
