The National Capital Commission (NCC) reopened its modernized campground at Philippe Lake in Gatineau Park on June 12, capping three years of major rehabilitation.
The project marks the first significant overhaul of the site since the 1950s. The NCC upgraded core infrastructure, including electricity and drinking water, refurbished existing buildings and added new ones, among them a four-season indoor pavilion, a camp store, a kitchen shelter and an amphitheatre overlooking the lake.
Campers will find more comfort and privacy at individual sites, plus ten new mini-chalets, one of which is universally accessible. The campground also offers access to Smith Beach and activities for various ages. Nearby, canoe-camping has returned to la Pêche Lake, with sites reachable 30 to 90 minutes by paddle from the boat launch. The summer camping season runs from June 12 to October 12.
NCC chief executive officer Tobi Nussbaum said, "The reopening of Philippe Lake Campground marks an important milestone in our efforts to preserve this iconic local destination for future generations. These improvements ensure that visitors can enjoy a more comfortable and accessible outdoor experience while staying connected to the natural beauty that defines Gatineau Park."
Sophie Chatel, Member of Parliament for Pontiac – Kitigan Zibi, added, "Access to nature is an important part of our quality of life and well-being. The reopening of Philippe Lake Campground is wonderful news for families, outdoor enthusiasts, and everyone looking to connect with the beauty of Gatineau Park. I applaud the efforts to modernize these facilities while preserving the unique character and ecological richness that make this destination so special."
