Art to the Ears

Mélissa Gélinas

The DAÏMÔN Production Centre will present its sixth edition of Radio-Hull: Listen to the Arts! from September 4 to October 1, 2025. For the occasion, 28 days of sound creation, or about 672 hours without interruption, will be broadcast via 106.5 FM (Gatineau) or www.radiohull.ca.

Since its creation in 2020, during the pandemic, Radio-Hull has made it its mission to promote only artists from the Ottawa-Gatineau-Outaouais region. "It draws inspiration from the origins of radio to bring people together and discover all the creative richness of our region, without necessarily having to travel!" said Manon LP, Executive Director of the DAÏMÔN Production Centre.

According to LP, Radio-Hull: Listen to the Arts! consists of a unique, multidisciplinary, cultural event that showcases local artistic creations. “Festivalgoers will be invited to join, not at a specific location, but at their convenience: alone, with family or friends, from home, from the car, in a park, and more,” she explained. “Under the artistic direction of our guest curator Miranda Jones, dozens of local artists, cultural workers, and organizations will occupy the airwaves 24/7 for 28 consecutive days.” To achieve this, ten curated creations, six live events, a weekend of musical and sound experiments for families, and much more will be offered.

Sound creation is an interdisciplinary discipline that combines natural and/or synthesized sounds, voices, noises, vibrations, resonances, rhythms, and even silences to create and generate auditory, visual, and sensory works. "Sound art is distinguished by its conceptual approach and its connections with other disciplines such as electronics, acoustics, visual arts, media, video, and more," said LP. "Although related, since they both use sound as their primary source of inspiration and expression, music and sound art are two distinct artistic disciplines." Music focuses primarily on rhythm, in order to create a harmonious or expressive combination.
